Mercadillo de Tías (Tías Sunday Market)
Every Sunday morning the main square and surrounding streets of Tías village transform into a relaxed open-air market that draws a loyal mix of local farmers, artisan producers and curious visitors. It's one of the most authentic weekly markets on the island — far less touristy than the big Teguise market.
What to Buy
The stalls lean heavily local: wheels of Lanzarote's tangy goat's cheese, bottles of Malvasía wine from the La Geria volcanic vineyards, home-made mojo rojo and mojo verde sauces in recycled jars, and strings of the small sweet onions grown in the island's fertile valleys.
Craft stalls sell hand-painted ceramic pieces featuring César Manrique-inspired motifs, woven palm-leaf baskets and hand-embroidered linen — all made on the island rather than imported.
The Atmosphere
The market has a genuinely village feel: elderly residents catch up over coffee at the bar on the corner, children chase pigeons across the plaza, and the pace is unhurried. Arrive before 11 am for the best selection and the coolest temperatures.
A handful of food stalls sell fresh papas arrugadas with mojo, grilled chorizo rolls and strong café con leche — making a slow Sunday breakfast here one of the simple pleasures of staying in Tías municipality.
Getting There
Tías village is just 4 km inland from Puerto del Carmen. Taxis are cheap and plentiful from the resort, or you can walk the hill in about 45 minutes if the morning is cool.
Street parking is available on the roads leading into the village. The market typically runs from around 9 am to 2 pm.
