Mercato Coperto di Terni
Tucked behind Piazza della Repubblica in the heart of the city, Terni's covered market is a sensory immersion in Umbrian daily life — stalls piled with black truffles from the Valnerina, fat lentils from Castelluccio, pecorino aged in local caves and vegetables so vivid they look painted.
What to Buy and Taste
The truffle vendors are the stars of the show: rough-skinned black truffles (Tuber melanosporum) from nearby Norcia and Spoleto sell for a fraction of what you would pay in Rome or Florence, and the stallholders will vacuum-pack them for the journey home.
Look out for farro (emmer wheat) grown in the Valnerina hills, jars of wild-boar ragù, and hand-rolled umbricelli pasta — the thick, chewy local spaghetti that is Terni's signature first course.
Market Rhythm and Etiquette
The market is busiest between 08:00 and 12:30 on weekday mornings when local nonnas shop for the day's lunch. Saturday draws the largest crowd and the most colourful mix of stalls, including a small outdoor extension on the surrounding streets.
Prices are not negotiable as a rule, but buying several items from the same vendor often earns you a generous free sample — a sliver of aged pecorino or a spoonful of truffle paste on a cracker.
