Restaurant Les Coques
Tucked inside the medieval Part Alta beneath the Roman walls, Les Coques has been feeding Tarragona's in-the-know diners for decades with a menu that reads like a love letter to Camp de Tarragona produce. The dining room is intimate and stone-walled; the cooking is precise, generous and deeply local.
What to Order
Start with the escalivada — fire-roasted aubergine and red peppers glistening with Siurana extra-virgin olive oil, a PDO product pressed from Arbequina olives grown in the hills above the city. The fideuà negra (black squid-ink noodles with alioli) is a house signature that arrives in a wide, blackened paella pan and smells of the sea in the best possible way.
For a main, the slow-braised lamb from the Prades mountains is fall-apart tender and seasoned with wild thyme and rosemary. Finish with a crema catalana that is torched to order at the table — the crack of the caramel crust is deeply satisfying.
Practical Details
The restaurant sits on Carrer dels Cavallers in the heart of the old city, a street so atmospheric it has appeared in several Catalan historical films. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday dinner; midweek lunch is usually walkable. The menú del dia at lunch runs to roughly €18 for three courses with wine and is exceptional value for the quality.
The owner, Pilar, has an encyclopaedic knowledge of local Denominació d'Origen Tarragona wines and will steer you toward small-production bottles you will not find outside the region.
