Mercat Central de Tarragona

Housed in a handsome 1915 Modernista building on Plaça Corsini, the Mercat Central is the beating culinary heart of Tarragona — a place where fishermen's wives haggle over crates of razor clams and elderly farmers stack pyramids of Siurana almonds. It is as authentic as Catalan market life gets.

What to Buy and Eat

The fish hall is the undisputed star: look for fresh-off-the-boat espinetes (small local sprats), sea urchins cracked open on the spot, and the fat red prawns from the nearby port of Cambrils that local chefs pay small fortunes for. The cured-meat stalls are equally compelling, with hanging legs of black-footed Iberian ham and hand-rolled botifarra sausages seasoned with pine nuts and raisins in the old Catalan style.

Don't leave without picking up a jar of mel de romaní — wild rosemary honey from the Prades mountains — and a bag of dried figs from the Camp de Tarragona plain. Prices are noticeably lower here than in Barcelona's La Boqueria, and the atmosphere is entirely local.

Timing Your Visit

The market is liveliest Tuesday to Saturday from 7 am until around 2 pm, with Friday being the biggest fish day when the widest variety arrives from the Tarragona fish auction. Saturday morning draws the surrounding village producers who set up stalls outside with seasonal vegetables, wild mushrooms in autumn and strawberries in spring.

A ring of no-frills cafés on Plaça Corsini serve market workers their second breakfast of pa amb tomàquet and a glass of cold cava — joining them is one of the cheapest and most pleasurable things you can do in the city.
