Ponte Girevole (Swing Bridge) & Mar Piccolo Panorama
Standing on the Ponte Girevole — the 1887 iron swing bridge that pivots to let tall vessels pass between the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo — you get one of the most geographically dramatic views in all of Puglia. Look one way and the open Ionian Sea stretches to the horizon; turn around and the enclosed, mirror-calm Mar Piccolo lagoon reflects the old town skyline.
The View and the Bridge
The bridge itself is a handsome piece of 19th-century engineering, painted in dark green iron and still operational — when it swings open (usually for naval or fishing vessels), a small crowd always gathers to watch, and the slow mechanical rotation is oddly mesmerising.
The Mar Piccolo side of the view frames the mussel-farming platforms floating on the lagoon's glassy surface, with herons and egrets picking their way along the muddy banks — a scene of working, lived-in nature that feels far removed from the tourist trail.
At sunset the light turns the Mar Grande a deep copper-orange while the old town's cathedral dome goes silhouette — this is the single best free photograph in Taranto.
Extending the Walk
From the bridge, walk north along the Mar Piccolo lungomare (Viale Virgilio) for 10–15 minutes to reach a quieter stretch of waterfront with benches, fishing boats tied up at low wooden jetties and views across to the green hills of the Apulia countryside.
In the other direction, the Aragonese Castle sits just a few metres from the bridge on the old town side — its massive 15th-century towers and the channel between the two seas make a compelling composition for photographers.
Early morning is magical here: mist often sits on the Mar Piccolo, the fish market is in full swing nearby, and the bridge has almost no foot traffic.
