The Route Through Sondrio
The paved riverside segment near Sondrio runs beside poplar-lined banks with the Rhaetian Alps rising sharply to the north and the gentler Orobie foothills to the south — a panorama that changes colour with every season.
Cyclists can rent bikes at the Sondrio train station area and cover 20–30 km in a leisurely morning, stopping at riverside benches or small bars in villages like Montagna in Valtellina along the way.
Best Seasons & What to Look For
Autumn is the standout season: from mid-September to late October the vine terraces flame gold and red, and the scent of fermenting must drifts across the path from nearby cantinas.
Spring brings wildflowers and snowmelt-swollen rivers, while summer mornings are cool enough for a long ride before the valley heats up by noon. Winter is quieter but the snow-capped backdrop is cinematic.
