Castello Eurialo
Perched on the Epipolae plateau 8 km west of the city centre, Castello Eurialo is the best-preserved ancient Greek military fortification in the world, a vast 4th-century BC complex of towers, drawbridges and underground tunnels built by the tyrant Dionysius I. The views from the ramparts sweep across the entire Syracuse plain to the sea, and on a clear day you can see Mount Etna.
The Fortifications
The castle's three defensive ditches, carved directly into the living rock, are extraordinary feats of engineering that stumped Roman attackers for decades. Walk the perimeter walls and the scale of Dionysius's ambition becomes visceral — this was designed to make Syracuse impregnable.
The keep and tower ruins are freely explorable, and the underground passages (bring a torch or use your phone light) connect chambers where soldiers slept, stored weapons and could move unseen between defensive positions. It is genuinely atmospheric rather than sanitised.
Views & Surroundings
The plateau sits at about 160 metres above sea level and the panorama is exceptional: the city of Siracusa, the Porto Grande, Ortigia island and the agricultural plain all laid out below you like a relief map. This is the best elevated viewpoint in the Siracusa area.
The site is rarely crowded even in high summer, partly because it requires a short drive or bus ride. That solitude, combined with the scale of the ruins, makes it feel like a genuine discovery rather than a tick-box sight.
Getting There
Drive west from Siracusa on the SS114 and follow signs for Belvedere and then Eurialo; the journey takes about 15 minutes by car. City bus no. 11 from Corso Umberto also serves the area, though services are infrequent.
Combine the visit with a picnic on the plateau using supplies from the Mercato di Ortigia — there are grassy areas near the entrance with Etna views that are perfect for a long lunch.
