Cité de la Céramique – Sèvres National Porcelain Museum

The Manufacture nationale de Sèvres has been shaping the world's finest porcelain since 1756, and its attached museum holds over 50,000 pieces that trace the full arc of European and global ceramic history. Walking these galleries feels like stepping inside a royal cabinet of curiosities — every glaze, every gilded rim tells a story.

The Collection

The permanent galleries span ancient Greek amphorae through Tang dynasty earthenware all the way to contemporary studio ceramics, making this one of the broadest ceramic collections on the planet. Highlight pieces include the extraordinary 18th-century Sèvres dinner services commissioned for Versailles and the soft-paste biscuit figurines that made the manufacture world-famous.

A dedicated wing traces the technical evolution of porcelain-making, with cross-sections of kilns, raw kaolin samples and fired test tiles that reveal just how obsessive the craft really is. It's unexpectedly gripping even for visitors who arrive thinking they don't care about pottery.

The Living Manufacture

Guided tours of the active workshops let you watch master craftspeople throw, paint and gild pieces that will eventually end up in Élysée Palace state rooms or foreign embassies. Booking a workshop tour in advance is strongly recommended — places fill weeks ahead.

The museum shop sells seconds and special editions at prices still steep enough to feel significant, but far below gallery retail. A small Sèvres espresso cup makes one of the most authentically French souvenirs imaginable.
