Trésor de la Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Sens
Sens Cathedral was the first truly Gothic cathedral built in France, begun around 1135, and its treasury is one of the most extraordinary collections of medieval liturgical art in Europe. Silk vestments once worn by Thomas Becket, Byzantine ivories and jewelled reliquaries crowd the ancient sacristy rooms in a way that feels genuinely overwhelming.
A Gothic Pioneer You Can Touch
Saint-Étienne de Sens predates Notre-Dame de Paris by three decades and served as the model that inspired every soaring Gothic nave that followed. Walking beneath those ribbed vaults, you feel the moment European architecture changed direction.
The cathedral's stained-glass windows span eight centuries of craftsmanship — the oldest panels in the choir date from the 12th century and glow amber and cobalt even on a grey Burgundian morning.
The Treasury Upstairs
Climb the spiral stair to the treasury rooms and you find Thomas Becket's chasuble and sandals displayed in low, reverent light — objects that crossed the Channel with the exiled Archbishop in the 1160s and never went back.
Among the ivories, enamels and Merovingian jewellery, look for the so-called 'Suaire de Saint Victor', a rare 4th-century Egyptian textile that has survived intact for 1,700 years. Few provincial French museums can match this density of genuine rarity.
Planning Your Visit
The cathedral itself is free and open daily; the treasury requires a separate ticket (around €5) and is managed by the Musées de Sens next door. Allow at least 90 minutes for both.
The Palais Synodal beside the cathedral — a perfectly preserved 13th-century episcopal palace — is included in the same museum ticket and is worth every extra minute you give it.
