Marché de Sens — Place de la République
Every Saturday morning the Place de la République and surrounding streets fill with one of the most authentic weekly markets in northern Burgundy, drawing farmers, cheesemakers and charcutiers from across the Yonne department. It is the kind of market where locals actually shop rather than pose, and the produce reflects exactly what is growing in the fields that week.
What to Buy and Where to Look
The cheese stalls are the undisputed highlight: look for Époisses (the pungent, washed-rind Burgundian classic), Soumaintrain and fresh chèvre logs rolled in ash or herbs. The affineurs who sell here often age their own wheels, so you can ask about the exact village of origin.
Seasonal vegetables from the Gâtinais plain arrive in theatrical abundance — white asparagus in April and May, plump Charentais melons in July, wild mushrooms in autumn. Pair whatever you buy with a bottle from the Chablis or Irancy producers who set up their own tables at the market's northern edge.
Beyond the Food Stalls
The market also spills into a bric-à-brac and antiques section along the Rue de la République where you can spend a happy hour hunting for vintage Gien faïence, old linen and Burgundian wine paraphernalia at prices that would make a Paris flea-market dealer weep.
A cluster of roasters and coffee carts set up near the cathedral steps, making this the natural place to pause, croissant in hand, and watch the whole social theatre of a French provincial Saturday unfold.
Getting There and Timing
The market runs from roughly 07:30 to 13:00 every Saturday. Arrive before 09:00 for the best selection of cheese and charcuterie; the serious local buyers clear the prime stalls fast.
Sens town centre is compact and entirely walkable from the train station, so there is no need for a car. A wheeled shopping trolley — the universal badge of the committed French market-goer — will serve you better than a tote bag.
