Remparts Gallo-Romains Panoramic Walk
Senlis sits inside one of the best-preserved Gallo-Roman defensive walls in northern France, a third-century circuit of 28 towers and four gates that you can walk almost entirely. From the elevated stretch behind the cathedral, the view over the slate rooftops and the forest beyond is the kind of scene that stops you mid-sentence.
The Wall Walk Itself
The most rewarding section runs from the Porte de Meaux northward past the Tour Saint-Paul, where the wall rises to nearly seven metres and the stonework — a distinctive herringbone pattern of small Roman tiles set into rubble — is still crisp enough to photograph in close-up detail.
The path along the top of the ramparts is narrow and slightly uneven; wear shoes with grip and you will be rewarded with elevated views that no street-level stroll can match.
Best Spots for Photos and Picnics
The grassy berm running along the inner face of the wall between the Tour du Connétable and the cathedral apse is essentially a secret garden: shaded by linden trees, scattered with benches, and almost entirely free of tourists even in July.
Looking north from the highest point of the walk on a clear day you can see the forest of Chantilly stretching to the horizon — a reminder that Senlis was once a royal hunting base and the forest was the king's backyard.
History in Every Stone
The walls were built under Emperor Aurelian around 270 AD to protect the town — then called Augustomagus — from Germanic raids. Medieval builders later added towers and raised sections, creating an accidental timeline of military architecture.
A free printed guide to the ramparts circuit is available at the Senlis tourist office on Place du Parvis; it identifies each tower by name and dates the different construction phases.
