Le Scaramouche
Tucked into a 17th-century building on Rue Saint-Hilaire, Le Scaramouche has been feeding Senlis locals and knowing Parisian day-trippers for years with a menu that changes with the market and never overpromises. The duck confit with Sarladaise potatoes and the tarte Tatin finished tableside are the kind of dishes you think about on the train home.
What to Order
The lunch formule — starter, main and glass of wine for around €22 — is one of the best-value meals within 60 km of Paris. The terrine de campagne made in-house is a non-negotiable starter if it appears on the slate board that day.
For mains, the kitchen leans into Île-de-France and Picardy traditions: slow-braised rabbit with mustard sauce, pan-fried sandre (pike-perch) from the Oise river, and seasonal game in autumn when the Chantilly hunts are in full swing.
The Room and the Atmosphere
The dining room has exposed stone walls, low beams and mismatched vintage chairs that feel genuinely old rather than deliberately rustic. On warm days a small terrace opens onto a cobbled lane where the only sound is the occasional bicycle.
Service is unhurried in the best French sense — nobody will rush you between courses, and the owner is usually happy to talk you through the wine list, which majors in Loire and Burgundy bottles at honest prices.
Booking and Timing
Reservations are strongly recommended for Friday and Saturday lunch and all weekend evenings; the room seats only around 30 covers and fills quickly with regulars.
If you are visiting on a weekday, arriving at 12:15 usually secures a table without booking, and the lunch service has a more relaxed, neighbourhood-canteen feel.
