Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg
Perched at 755 metres on a forested Vosges spur just 12 kilometres west of Sélestat, the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg is the most visited historic monument in Alsace — and the panorama from its ramparts, sweeping from the Black Forest to the Vosges and down across the Rhine plain, justifies every step of the climb.
A Castle Rebuilt by a Kaiser
The original medieval fortress was razed in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War and left as a romantic ruin for two centuries. In 1899 the town of Sélestat gifted the ruins to Kaiser Wilhelm II, who commissioned architect Bodo Ebhardt to reconstruct it — a project completed in 1908 that is itself a fascinating document of Wilhelmine historicism.
The result is part genuine medieval masonry, part early-20th-century vision of what a medieval castle should look like. The tension between the two eras makes it more intellectually interesting than a purely original site.
The View and How to Use It
The southern tower's viewing platform delivers the headline panorama: on a clear day you can see the Strasbourg Cathedral spire to the north, the Colmar plain below and the dark ridge of the Black Forest beyond the Rhine. Sunrise visits in autumn, when mist fills the plain and only the hilltops emerge, are genuinely spectacular.
The castle is surrounded by the Forêt de Kintzheim, and a network of marked trails connects it to the Vosges ridge walk (GR5), making it easy to combine a castle visit with a half-day hike.
