Restaurant Le Jardin de Sedan

Set in a converted townhouse with a walled garden shaded by century-old plane trees, Le Jardin de Sedan is the kind of neighbourhood restaurant that locals guard jealously and visitors stumble upon with pure delight. Chef Arnaud Collignon cooks with obvious affection for the Ardennes larder — trout from the Semoy river, venison from local estates, wild garlic foraged from the Meuse valley woods.

What to order

The signature dish is a slow-braised venison shoulder with juniper jus, celeriac purée and pickled bilberries — a plate that tastes unmistakably of the dark, resinous forests surrounding the city. In spring, don't miss the Semoy trout with brown butter and wild garlic, sourced from a family-run trout farm less than 30 km away.

The cheese trolley arrives with six or seven regional options including a properly aged Rocroi and a creamy Langres — ask the server to walk you through them rather than pointing blindly.

The space and the wine list

The garden terrace seats around 30 and is open from May through September; in cooler months the interior dining room with its exposed stone walls and wood-burning stove is equally appealing.

The wine list leans Champagne and Burgundy, but the sommelier is quietly evangelical about natural wines from the nearby Côteaux Champenois appellation — still wines from Champagne grapes that are criminally underrated and excellent value.
