Panorama from the Tour de l'Horloge Ramparts

Tucked into the upper circuit of the Château Fort's outer walls, the platform near the Tour de l'Horloge (Clock Tower) delivers the finest free-ranging panorama in the entire Ardennes département. The red-tile rooftops of Sedan's old town, the silver ribbon of the Meuse and the dark green hills of the Belgian border stretch out in every direction.

The best vantage point in the city

Unlike the main castle ticket areas, this section of the outer wall can be accessed from the public promenade that rings the fortress base — making it accessible even outside castle opening hours. The stone parapet is wide enough to set up a tripod comfortably.

Sunrise here is extraordinary in autumn: river fog fills the valley while the upper town glows amber, and you'll often have the entire terrace to yourself. Bring a thermos.

What to look for

To the north, the spire of the Église Saint-Charles punctuates the skyline. To the south, the wooded ridge of the Bois de la Marfée marks the site of the 1641 Battle of La Marfée, one of the last great engagements of the Thirty Years' War.

On clear days the Rocroi plateau is visible to the west — another fortress town worth a half-day detour if you're travelling by car.
