Marché de Sedan — Place du Château
Every Saturday morning, the esplanade below the Château Fort fills with the colour and noise of Sedan's weekly open-air market, one of the liveliest in the Ardennes. Local farmers drive in from the Meuse valley and the Belgian border country, piling trestle tables with Ardennes ham, raw-milk cheeses, wild mushrooms and early-season strawberries from the river flats.
What to buy and eat
The charcuterie stalls are the undisputed stars: jambon d'Ardenne (dry-cured ham with a Protected Geographical Indication) sold in thick hand-cut slices, pâté de sanglier (wild boar terrine) and boudin noir spiced with juniper. Pair any of these with a wedge of Rocroi cheese from the dairy cooperative stand near the north entrance.
A handful of hot-food vendors set up by 9 am — look for the galette-saucisse stall and the crepe cart that has been run by the same family for over a decade. Grab one and eat it on the low wall with the castle towers framing the view above you.
Timing and atmosphere
The market runs from roughly 7:30 am to 1 pm. Arrive before 9 am for the best produce and the most authentic atmosphere, when local grandmothers are doing their weekly shop rather than tourists.
A smaller Wednesday market occupies the same square with fewer stalls but equally good bread from the Boulangerie Artisanale Lebrun, whose sourdough miches are worth planning your itinerary around.
