Restaurant Le Grand Bleu

Chef Maxime Lebrun's Le Grand Bleu is the most acclaimed restaurant in Sarlat, holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition and a loyal following among food-serious travellers who know that the Périgord's larder — truffles, duck, cèpes, walnuts — deserves more than tourist-trap bistro treatment. The cooking is rooted in the region but refined with genuine technique, and the dining room in a convert

What to Order

The menu changes with the seasons but certain signatures recur: a silky velouté of cèpe mushrooms with a truffle cream, magret de canard cooked to a precise blush pink with a walnut-and-honey jus, and a warm walnut tart with salted caramel ice cream that alone justifies the journey. The set lunch menu (around €28 for two courses) is exceptional value for this level of cooking.

The wine list leans sensibly into the local Bergerac and Pécharmant appellations — ask the sommelier to guide you toward a Pécharmant rouge, the underrated Cabernet-Merlot blend from just 25 km away that pairs beautifully with the duck dishes.

Practical Details

Le Grand Bleu is located at 43 Avenue de Selves, a five-minute walk south of the old town's main gate. The restaurant seats around 40 covers so reservation is essential in summer — book at least a week ahead for July and August sittings.

Lunch service runs Tuesday to Sunday; dinner is served Thursday to Saturday. Closed in January and for two weeks in November. Budget around €50–€70 per person for three courses with wine.
