The Garden Rooms
The gardens are structured as a sequence of outdoor 'rooms', each with its own character: the Grand Allée is a 200-metre corridor of alternating hornbeam columns and white stone urns that creates a perspective so precise it looks like a Renaissance painting; the Roseraie is a softer, more romantic enclosure of climbing roses and box-edged beds; and the Jardin Français is a formal parterre of geometric yew sculptures that takes 12,000 hours of annual hand-clipping to maintain.
The gardens are entirely maintained without pesticides or chemical fertilisers — a remarkable commitment given the scale of topiary involved. The head gardener leads occasional tours explaining the pruning techniques, which have been passed down through generations of local artisans.
When to Visit
Spring (April–May) brings the rose gardens into bloom alongside the fresh green flush of new hedge growth. Summer offers the full theatrical impact of the mature green architecture against blue Périgord skies. Autumn is quieter and the light is softer, with morning mist sometimes pooling in the lower garden rooms.
The gardens open daily from 10:00 to 19:00 in summer (reduced hours off-season). The on-site tea room serves regional pastries and local walnut cake — a civilised way to end the visit.
