Mercato di San Benedetto, Cagliari

Spread across two floors in the Villanova district of Cagliari, the Mercato di San Benedetto is the largest covered market in Italy by surface area and the most honest introduction to what Sardinians actually eat. Arrive before 9 am when the fish hall downstairs is at its roaring, ice-glistening best.

The Fish Hall

The ground floor is an aquatic theatre: whole swordfish jostle for space with trays of sea urchins, clams, dentex and the prized bottarga — the compressed, salt-cured mullet roe that Sardinians grate over pasta like gold dust.

Fishmongers will vacuum-pack bottarga for travel if you ask nicely; a 100g block of the good stuff costs around €15–€20 and keeps for months.

The Upper Floor

Upstairs, the produce stalls overflow with mirto berries, wild fennel, pecorino wheels at every age from fresh to aged-hard, and cured meats including lardo di Colonnata-style pork fatback seasoned with local herbs.

Grab a stool at one of the tiny bar counters tucked between stalls for a shot of espresso and a seada — a fried pastry filled with lemon-scented cheese and drizzled with bitter honey — for under €2.
