Pulpería Ezequiel
In a city full of restaurants chasing pilgrim footfall, Pulpería Ezequiel on Rúa do Franco has held its ground for decades by doing one thing supremely well: pulpo á feira, Galician octopus served on a wooden board with paprika, sea salt and olive oil. It is the most honest, satisfying plate of food you will eat in Santiago.
The Dish and the Room
Pulpo á feira is deceptively simple — octopus boiled in copper cauldrons, sliced with scissors onto a wooden board, dressed with coarse salt, smoked paprika and a pour of good Galician olive oil. The skill is entirely in the boiling: the texture must be tender but with a slight bite, never rubbery. Ezequiel's version consistently gets this right.
The dining room is unpretentious granite-walled and loud, with communal tables and the kind of no-nonsense service that tells you the food doesn't need dressing up. Order the pulpo, a plate of pementos de Padrón blistered in oil and salt, and a ceramic jug of house Albariño and you have the perfect Galician lunch.
What Else to Order
Beyond octopus, the kitchen does excellent lacón con grelos (cured pork shoulder with turnip greens) in winter months — a deeply savoury Galician staple that rarely appears on tourist menus. The caldo galego, a hearty broth of potato, greens and pork, is another worth ordering on a grey Atlantic afternoon.
Bread arrives automatically — thick, crusty Galician pan de millo (corn bread) that is ideal for mopping up the paprika-stained olive oil left on the board. Do not leave that oil behind.
When to Visit
Rúa do Franco is Santiago's main restaurant street and gets extremely busy at peak lunch hours (14:00–15:30) and in July–August. Arriving at 13:30 when the kitchen opens, or after 15:30, usually means a shorter wait for a table. The restaurant does not take reservations.
The street itself is worth a slow walk regardless — lined with granite arcades, tapas bars and the occasional pilgrim still wearing their scallop shell, it captures the particular mix of sacred and secular that defines Santiago.
