Pale di San Martino Natural Park
Rising behind the village like a fortress wall, the Pale di San Martino is one of the most dramatic high-altitude plateaus in the entire Dolomites — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of bone-white rock towers and wild silence. Cable cars and chairlifts make the otherworldly Altopiano delle Pale accessible even without mountaineering skills.
The Plateau & Its Towers
Take the Rosetta cable car from the village centre up to 2,609 m and step onto a vast, almost lunar expanse ringed by the Cimon della Pala (3,184 m) — the so-called 'Matterhorn of the Dolomites'. On a clear morning the pale limestone glows amber-pink in the early light, and the silence is absolute save for the wind.
A network of signed trails crosses the plateau, ranging from easy 90-minute loops to full-day traverses. The path to Rifugio Rosetta (CAI 709) is flat enough for confident walkers in good boots and rewards you with jaw-dropping views over the Val Canali below.
Wildlife & Wildflowers
Late June and July transform the lower meadows into a carpet of alpine wildflowers — edelweiss, gentian and alpine clover — while marmots whistle from every boulder field. Golden eagles nest in the cliff faces above Baita Segantini (2,174 m), a historic mountain hut worth visiting in its own right.
The park is also home to chamois, red deer and the occasional fox. Dawn and dusk are the best windows for wildlife spotting; bring binoculars and stay quiet on the trail edges.
Practical Access
The Funivia Rosetta departs from the southern end of the village. In summer (late June–mid September) it runs from roughly 08:30 to 17:30. A return ticket costs around €20 for adults. The Seggiovia Col Verde chairlift offers a lower, greener alternative for families with small children.
Always check weather forecasts before heading onto the plateau — afternoon thunderstorms build fast in summer. Layers, a waterproof jacket and sunscreen are non-negotiable even in August.
