Baita Segantini & Col Verde Panorama
Giovanni Segantini immortalised these meadows in the 1890s, and the view from the Col Verde shoulder (2,000 m) above San Martino di Castrozza still looks uncannily like one of his paintings — lush green alps, scattered larch forest and the Pale di San Martino soaring beyond. It is arguably the single most photogenic viewpoint accessible by chairlift in the entire region.
Reaching the Viewpoint
The Seggiovia Col Verde chairlift deposits you at 2,000 m in around 15 minutes. From the top station it is a gentle 20-minute walk through larch woods to Baita Segantini, a beautifully restored mountain refuge named after the Swiss-Italian painter who lived and worked here.
The panorama from the terrace of the baita takes in the full southern wall of the Pale — Cimon della Pala, Cima della Vezzana and Cima Canali — arranged in a perfect arc. Sunrise and the two hours before sunset produce the most theatrical light on the rock faces.
The Segantini Connection
A small permanent exhibition inside the baita reproduces Segantini's original sketches and oil studies made on this very spot, giving context to the landscape in front of you. His painting 'Le due madri' was conceived here, and standing in the same spot creates a genuine frisson of art-historical connection.
The refuge itself was rebuilt in 2018 and is impeccably maintained. It serves local Trentino cheeses, cured meats and homemade strudel — ideal fuel before the walk back down through the larch forest.
Combining with a Longer Walk
From Baita Segantini you can continue on trail CAI 347 toward Malga Ces and loop back to the village via the valley floor — a round trip of about 3.5 hours with 350 m of ascent. The path passes through classic alpine pasture grazed by brown Rendena cattle, and the cowbells are as atmospheric as anything in the Alps.
Alternatively, descend on foot via the Sentiero dei Pittori (Painters' Path), a waymarked route that follows Segantini's own walking itinerary and is dotted with reproduction panels of his paintings at the exact spots where he set up his easel.
