Marché de Sallanches — Saturday Morning Market

Every Saturday morning the Place Mégevand and surrounding streets fill with over 80 stalls selling raw-milk Reblochon, Beaufort d'alpage, smoked saucisson, honey from high-altitude hives and fresh seasonal vegetables grown in the Arve valley. It is the most authentic weekly market between Cluses and Chamonix.

What to Buy

Head straight for the fromagerie stalls near the central fountain — you will find Beaufort AOP aged 12 months, creamy Tomme de Savoie and the nutty, washed-rind Abondance that rarely makes it to export markets. Prices are noticeably lower than in Chamonix.

The charcuterie vendors offer diots (Savoyard pork sausages), dried bresaola from the Aosta valley just over the border, and terrines made with wild boar from local hunts. Arrive by 9 am for the best selection before the tour buses from Megève roll in.

Beyond the Food

A handful of stalls sell handmade linen, locally thrown pottery and carved wooden utensils — good-quality, low-key souvenirs that beat the usual Alpine kitsch.

The café terraces around the square open early; grab a grand crème and a croissant at Café du Centre and watch the market set up — one of those effortlessly cinematic small-town French moments.

Practical Tips

The market runs year-round, rain or shine, from roughly 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. Summer stalls spill further down Rue Nationale, nearly doubling in number from July to August.

Parking is easiest in the underground car park on Avenue de Savoie; it fills quickly after 9 am on peak summer weekends, so aim to arrive early.
