Belvédère du Mont Blanc, Cordon
The village of Cordon, perched on a natural terrace 1,100 m above the Arve valley just 8 km from Sallanches, is widely regarded by Alpine photographers as offering the single most complete and unobstructed view of Mont Blanc available from any inhabited village in France. No cable car needed — you simply drive up and the mountain fills your windscreen.
The View & Why It Works
Unlike the Chamonix valley, which sits directly beneath the massif and forces you to crane your neck, Cordon sits at the perfect distance and angle to see Mont Blanc (4,808 m), the Dôme du Goûter and the Aiguille du Midi as a single, coherent pyramid rising above the Arve valley. Landscape photographers call this the 'portrait' view.
The village church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, with its distinctive onion-domed bell tower, sits in the foreground of the classic shot — the combination of Baroque church and glaciated summit is the image that appears on more Haute-Savoie tourism posters than any other.
Walking the Balcony Trail
A gentle balcony trail runs east from the village centre for 3 km to the hamlet of Les Frasses, maintaining constant elevation and therefore constant Mont Blanc views. The path passes through hay meadows and old apple orchards — this part of the Aravis foothills has been farmed the same way for centuries.
In late September the apple harvest is underway and several farms sell juice and cider direct from the barn door. It is an almost comically idyllic scene against the backdrop of the highest mountain in Western Europe.
Getting There & Staying
Drive the D113 from Sallanches — 15 minutes, entirely on tarmac. There is free parking at the Place du Village. The road is open year-round; in winter Cordon becomes a small, family-oriented ski resort with a refreshingly un-commercialised atmosphere.
The village has two excellent small hotels — Les Roches Fleuries and Le Chamois d'Or — both with south-facing terraces that frame the Mont Blanc view. Staying overnight lets you catch the alpenglow on the summit at both sunrise and sunset, which are genuinely different shades of pink.
