Saturday Morning Market on Place du Général Leclerc
Every Saturday morning the main square of Sainte-Menehould fills with producers from across the Argonne and the Champagne Crayeuse, selling everything from raw-milk cheeses and smoked charcuterie to wild mushrooms foraged from the surrounding forest. It is the social and gastronomic heart of the town.
What to Look For
Stalls from local farms bring Maroilles and Langres cheeses alongside the less-famous but excellent fromages de l'Argonne. Charcutiers sell andouillette, smoked hams, and — naturally — preparations of pig's trotters to take home and finish yourself.
In autumn the mushroom sellers are unmissable: ceps, girolles, and pieds de mouton from the Argonne forest appear in wicker baskets alongside jars of preserves and wild-berry jams. Honey producers from the Meuse valley are also regulars.
The Rhythm of the Market
The market runs from roughly 8 am to 12:30 pm and is busiest between 9 and 11. Locals do their weekly shop here with genuine purposefulness — this is not a tourist market but a working one, which makes it all the more enjoyable to wander.
The café terraces around the square open early on market days, making it easy to combine a strong coffee and a croissant with an hour of browsing before the stalls pack up.
