La Cabane de l'Écailler
Tucked into the working end of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat's small harbour, this unfussy seafood shack has been shucking oysters and cracking sea urchins for locals and in-the-know visitors for years — a deliberate antidote to the white-tablecloth restaurants that line the quay. Arrive hungry, bring cash, and claim a stool at the zinc counter before the lunch crowd descends.
What to Order
The oursins (sea urchins) are the headline act from November through April — harvested locally, split at the counter and served with a sliver of grilled bread and unsalted butter. The flavour is intensely briny and oceanic in a way that makes supermarket versions taste like cardboard.
In summer, switch to the plateau de fruits de mer: a tiered tower of Brittany oysters, clams, whelks, langoustines and half a lobster that arrives at the table in a cloud of crushed ice. Order the house Picpoul de Pinet to drink — it is cold, crisp and costs a fraction of what the restaurant next door charges for the same bottle.
Atmosphere and Practicalities
The setting is deliberately rough-and-ready: plastic stools, a chalkboard menu, fishing nets on the wall and the smell of salt water drifting in from the harbour. It is one of the very few places on Cap Ferrat where you can eat exceptionally well without feeling underdressed.
Arrive by noon on weekends or expect to wait; the shack holds perhaps 20 people and does not take reservations.
