Restaurant La Terrasse, Saint-Cyprien

Tucked into the heart of the village, La Terrasse is the kind of unhurried, family-run restaurant that reminds you why Périgord cuisine has such a devoted following. The menu reads like a love letter to the region: duck confit crisped in its own fat, pommes sarladaises glistening with goose fat and garlic, and a walnut cake that arrives warm with crème fraîche.

What to order

Start with a terrine de foie gras maison served with toasted pain de campagne and Monbazillac jelly — the sweet wine pairing is non-negotiable. Follow it with the confit de canard, whose skin shatters at the touch of a fork, revealing meat that has been slow-cooked to silky perfection.

The cheese course deserves serious attention: a local Cabécou aged on straw, a wedge of Ossau-Iraty and a drizzle of chestnut honey is a combination that needs no improvement. The wine list leans heavily on Bergerac and Pécharmant appellations, both excellent value.

The setting and atmosphere

The shaded stone terrace at the back of the restaurant overlooks a small walled garden — in July and August this is one of the most pleasant places to spend a long lunch in the entire Dordogne. The pace is deliberately slow; a three-course lunch here is a two-hour affair, and that is exactly as it should be.

Service is warm and knowledgeable without being formal. The patron is usually happy to explain the provenance of the duck or recommend a local Monbazillac producer worth visiting — lean into the conversation.
