Sentier du Bord de Mer (Coastal Path)
The coastal footpath from Cap Martin to Menton is one of the most scenically loaded walks on the entire French Riviera — crystalline water below, umbrella pines above, and the Italian Alps framing the horizon. It is free, signposted, and completely car-free.
The Walk Itself
The path runs roughly 6 km one-way from the tip of Cap Martin to the old port of Menton, hugging sea-level rocks before climbing to a clifftop promenade with panoramic benches positioned at every photogenic bend. Allow 2–2.5 hours at a relaxed pace with stops.
The section between Cap Martin and Carnolès is the wildest, threading past limestone outcrops, hidden coves and the rusted jetty where Le Corbusier swam daily until his fatal heart attack here in 1965. A small plaque marks the exact spot — quietly moving for architecture lovers.
What to Look Out For
At the Cap Martin headland itself, the path circles through a dense canopy of Aleppo pines and holm oaks, opening suddenly onto views of Monaco's towers and the Italian coastline stretching east toward Ventimiglia. Sunrise here is extraordinary — the light turns the limestone cliffs amber.
About halfway along, the path passes directly below the terrace of E-1027, the modernist villa designed by Eileen Gray in 1929. The building has been restored and can be visited separately by guided tour (book ahead via the Cap Moderne website). Even from the path you can see its elegant white geometry against the rock.
