Puerto de Ibañeta (Roncesvalles Pass)
At 1,057 metres above sea level, the Ibañeta Pass is the dramatic mountain gateway through which pilgrims, armies and merchants have crossed the Pyrenees for millennia. On a clear morning the views sweep from the beech forests of Navarre south to the plains beyond Pamplona, while mist curls through the valleys below like slow smoke.
The Pass That Made History
A simple modern chapel marks the spot where, according to legend, Roland sounded his ivory horn Oliphant in the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778 AD — the episode immortalised in the Chanson de Roland, one of the oldest works of French literature.
A stone monument beside the chapel commemorates this medieval epic, and on quiet mornings the only sounds are wind through beech branches and the distant cowbells of grazing livestock.
Walking the Beech Forest
The GR-65 trail drops from Ibañeta through the Bosque de Irati's outlying beeches, a cathedral of copper and gold in October when autumn colour peaks across the entire Pyrenean foothills.
A short, well-signed loop trail of about 3 km starts at the pass car park, dipping into the forest and returning along a ridge with unobstructed views into France — no technical skill required, just waterproof boots.
Best Seasons and Practical Notes
Late June brings wildflower meadows studded with orchids and gentians along the roadside verges; late October delivers the full beech-forest fireworks of amber, rust and gold.
The N-135 road from Valcarlos is the only paved access from Spain; in heavy snow the pass closes and the alternative route via the Valle del Baztán adds 45 minutes to the drive.
