Collegiate Church of Santa María de Roncesvalles

Standing at the very gateway of the Camino de Santiago in Spain, this 13th-century Gothic collegiate church has welcomed exhausted pilgrims for over eight centuries. Its silver-mantled statue of the Virgin and the legendary Roland's tomb make it one of the most emotionally charged religious sites in all of Navarre.

A Pilgrim's First Sanctuary

The church's austere stone nave opens into a surprisingly luminous interior, where the gilded Gothic baldachin above the Virgin of Roncesvalles glows against grey walls worn smooth by generations of devoted hands.

Every evening the famous Pilgrim's Blessing — the Benedición de los Peregrinos — is held here, drawing walkers fresh off the Pyrenean pass who fill the pews still wearing muddy boots and damp rain capes.

The Royal Pantheon and Cloister

Beneath the church lies the Gothic pantheon of Sancho VII 'the Strong' of Navarre, whose tomb is flanked by enormous chains said to be war trophies from the 1212 Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.

The adjacent 14th-century cloister is a quiet marvel of trefoil arches framing a mossy garden — a place where the border between history and pilgrimage feels paper-thin.

Museum of the Collegiate

The small but rich Museo de la Colegiata houses the emerald said to have adorned the tent of the Almohad caliph captured at Las Navas de Tolosa, alongside medieval reliquaries and Romanesque ivory chessmen.

Opening hours are short in winter, so plan your visit for late morning when natural light floods the display cases and the crowds from the morning pilgrim wave have moved on.
