Collado de Lepoeder

At 1,430 metres, the Collado de Lepoeder is the highest point on the French route of the Camino de Santiago before the descent to Roncesvalles, and on a clear day the panorama stretches from the Basque coast in the northwest to the snowy peaks of the central Pyrenees in the east. It is, by almost universal pilgrim consensus, the single most spectacular viewpoint on the entire Spanish section of th

The View and What You See

Standing at the col, the entire green bowl of the Pyrenean foothills fans out below you toward Pamplona, with the silver thread of the Arga River visible on very clear days. Behind you, the French side drops away toward Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in a series of forested ridges.

In late June the surrounding meadows are thick with mountain wildflowers — yellow broom, purple thistle, white asphodel — and the contrast with the blue sky above makes the col feel almost impossibly picturesque.

How to Reach It

The classic approach is to walk the Napoleon Route from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France (25 km, about 7–8 hours total), reaching Lepoeder after the long climb through the Orisson ridge — a serious day's hiking requiring good fitness and weather awareness.

Alternatively, drive the D-428 from Arnéguy on the French side to the Bentarte pass, then walk the final 45 minutes of trail to Lepoeder — a far shorter approach that still rewards with the full panoramic payoff.

Weather and Safety

The col is notorious for rapid weather changes: clear skies at Saint-Jean can become thick cloud and driving rain at Lepoeder within two hours, and snow is possible from October through May.

Always check the Météo-France mountain forecast before setting out and carry a waterproof layer regardless of the morning weather — the Pyrenean microclimate here is genuinely unpredictable.
