Inside the Arena
The Colosseum held up to 80,000 spectators and its hypogeum — the labyrinthine underground network of tunnels and animal cages — is now accessible on guided tours that reveal the brutal machinery behind the spectacles above. Book the underground or arena-floor access in advance; standard entry only gives you the mid-tier galleries, which are still extraordinary but miss the most dramatic spaces.
The Roman Forum stretches immediately to the west, a jumble of columns, triumphal arches and temple podiums that once formed the beating heart of the Republic. Pick up a free audio guide via the official app before you arrive so you can identify the Temple of Saturn, the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Via Sacra without squinting at a map.
Palatine Hill & the View
Climb Palatine Hill — included in your ticket — for the best free panorama over the Forum below and the Circus Maximus on the far side. The shaded gardens up here are a genuine relief in summer and almost nobody lingers long enough to enjoy them.
Arrive when the gates open at 9 am to beat the tour-bus crowds, or come in the last two hours before closing when the light is warm and the queues dissolve. The site closes one hour before sunset, so times shift seasonally — check the official Parco Colosseo website the day before.
