Centrale Montemartini Museum
In a decommissioned early-20th-century power station in the Ostiense neighbourhood, ancient Roman marble statues stand among towering diesel engines and turbines in one of the most visually arresting museum installations in Europe. Centrale Montemartini is genuinely surprising, chronically undervisited and a strong contender for Rome's most photogenic interior.
The Collection
The museum houses overflow sculptures from the Capitoline Museums collection — which means the quality is extraordinary. Highlights include the reclining Capitoline Venus, a massive 1st-century BC mosaic of hunting scenes, and rows of portrait busts of Roman senators whose expressions range from serene to deeply suspicious. All of it is displayed between the original coal-fired boilers and generator halls of the 1912 Centrale Montemartini power station.
The juxtaposition is not gimmicky — it is genuinely thought-provoking. The scale of the industrial machinery dwarfs the statues in some rooms and is dwarfed by them in others, creating a dialogue between Roman antiquity and early industrial modernity that no conventional white-cube gallery could replicate.
Getting There & Practicalities
Centrale Montemartini sits on Via Ostiense in the Ostiense district, about 3 km south of the Colosseum. The neighbourhood is worth exploring in its own right — the old Gazometro (a vast 1930s gasometer) looms over the area, street art covers the railway underpasses, and the Mercato Trionfale's sister market, Mercato di Testaccio, is a 15-minute walk north.
The museum is rarely crowded even on weekends, which means you can take photographs without other visitors in frame — a rarity in Rome. The gift shop stocks unusually good archaeology books and prints.
