Parc du Sausset, Aulnay-sous-Bois / Villepinte
Designed by landscape architects Michel and Claire Corajoud and opened in 1985, the Parc du Sausset is one of the great unsung green spaces of the Paris Region — a 200-hectare designed landscape of lakes, meadows, woodland and wetland that sits almost directly beneath the CDG flight path yet feels utterly pastoral.
Lakes, Birds and Wildflower Meadows
Two large lakes at the park's heart — the Lac des Usages and the Lac Sauvage — attract breeding great crested grebes, grey herons, kingfishers and in winter flocks of pochards and tufted ducks. The Lac Sauvage is deliberately kept wild with reed margins and no footpath along its banks, so sightings feel genuinely earned.
In May and June the meadow sections between the woodland belts are left unmown and fill with ox-eye daisies, red poppies, cornflowers and wild orchids — a wildflower display that rivals anything in a formal botanical garden and costs nothing to enjoy.
Architecture of the Landscape
The Corajouds designed the park as a sequence of distinct landscape 'rooms' — a formal French garden near the Aulnay entrance, an English-style pastoral zone, a productive orchard and a wilder northern section — so a full circuit of the perimeter path (about 7 km) moves through genuinely different atmospheres.
The park's farm building, the Ferme du Sausset, hosts occasional open days with local produce markets and beekeeping demonstrations — check the Département Seine-Saint-Denis cultural calendar before visiting.
