Musée Soulages, Rodez
Designed by RCR Arquitectes and Passelac & Roques, this extraordinary museum opened in 2014 and is dedicated entirely to Pierre Soulages, the Ruthénois painter who turned black into a spectrum. Its weathered Corten steel facade already tells you this will be unlike any other provincial museum.
The man who painted with black
Pierre Soulages coined the term 'outrenoir' — beyond black — to describe how his canvases absorb and reflect light simultaneously, creating surfaces that shift from obsidian to silver as you move. The permanent collection spans seven decades of work, from his earliest post-war abstractions to the vast 'Polyptyques' that fill entire walls.
The museum holds more than 500 works donated by Soulages himself, making it the most complete record of any single French artist's output. Stand close to a late canvas and watch the ridged acrylic catch the skylight from above — it genuinely changes every few seconds.
Planning your visit
Temporary exhibitions on the upper floors regularly bring in international abstract artists who share Soulages's obsession with materiality and light, so even repeat visitors find something new. The bookshop stocks the best monographs on Soulages available anywhere, including limited-edition prints.
Allow at least two hours and visit on a sunny morning when the north-facing skylights flood the galleries with the cool, even light the curators intended. The rooftop terrace offers a surprising panorama over the Aveyron valley and the cathedral towers.
