Monte Cavo Summit & Via Sacra
At 949 metres, Monte Cavo is the highest peak in the Castelli Romani and was once crowned by the ancient Temple of Jupiter Latiaris, the holiest sanctuary of the Latin League. Today a cobbled Roman road — the original Via Sacra — winds through beech forest to the summit, making for one of the most atmospheric hikes near Rome.
The Ancient Via Sacra
The paved basalt-stone path you walk today is genuinely Roman — laid in the 4th century BC to allow triumphal processions to reach the hilltop temple. Large polygonal stones are still perfectly fitted, and in places you can see the worn central groove carved by two millennia of cart wheels and sandalled feet.
The route begins near the hamlet of Campofattore on the Rocca di Papa side and climbs steadily through a cathedral-like canopy of old-growth beech trees. The forest is eerily quiet, the air cool even in July, and the silence is broken only by woodpeckers and the occasional distant bell from the valley.
Summit Rewards
The summit plateau is occupied by a former NATO radar station (now decommissioned) and a small hotel-restaurant, the Ristorante Monte Cavo, where you can eat a plate of pasta e fagioli while gazing over a 360-degree panorama that on clear days encompasses Rome, the Alban Hills, the Pontine Marshes and the sea.
The ruins of the Temple of Jupiter Latiaris are modest — a few stone courses incorporated into the old convent walls — but the historical resonance is immense. This is where Roman generals celebrated lesser victories before the Capitoline triumph was granted.
