Mercato Settimanale di Rocca di Papa
Every Wednesday morning the lower piazza and surrounding streets of Rocca di Papa fill with one of the most genuinely local weekly markets in the Castelli Romani — no tourist trinkets, just seasonal fruit and vegetables grown in the volcanic soil of the Alban Hills, alongside cheese, salumi, bread and hardware stalls serving the town's everyday needs.
What to Buy
The agricultural stalls are the reason to come. In spring look for wild asparagus, fave beans and the first strawberries from the hillside gardens. Summer brings fat courgettes with their flowers still attached, fragrant basil plants, enormous beefsteak tomatoes and the first figs. Autumn is porcini mushroom season — locals bring foraged fungi down from Monte Cavo and sell them by the kilo from the boots of their cars on the market's edge.
The cheese stall run by a family from Ariccia is outstanding: fresh ricotta made that morning, aged pecorino from the surrounding hills, and a creamy caciotta that melts on bread. Buy a wedge of each and a loaf from the bread van — a Lariano-style pane di casa, dense and slightly sour — and you have the makings of a perfect picnic at the Belvedere.
The Market Atmosphere
The market runs from around 7:30 to 13:00 and is busiest between 9:00 and 11:00, when the town's older residents do their weekly shop with a rigour and seriousness that is deeply pleasurable to observe. Vendors know their regulars by name; prices are negotiated with cheerful informality.
A cluster of mobile food vans on the market's edge sells hot supplì (rice croquettes), roasted porchetta sandwiches and, on cold mornings, paper cups of hot broth. The bar on the corner of the piazza does a roaring trade in espresso and does not mind if you bring your market pastry to eat at the counter.
