Marché de Gramat

Every Tuesday and Friday morning, the market square of Gramat — the largest town on the Causse de Gramat, 12 km from Rocamadour — fills with producers selling the full larder of the Lot: walnuts, truffles in season, Rocamadour cheese (cabécou), duck confits, and honey from the plateau's wild-flower hives.

What to Buy

The star of the Gramat market is Rocamadour AOP cheese — a tiny, delicate disc of raw goat's milk cabécou that is creamy when young and pungent and nutty when aged (affiné). Several producers sell directly from their farm vans; look for cheese labelled 'Rocamadour AOP fermier' for the genuine article made on a single farm.

Between November and March, a small but serious truffle market operates on Friday mornings in the square. Black Périgord truffles (Tuber melanosporum) from the surrounding causse are weighed and sold by local truffle hunters — prices fluctuate but expect €800–1,200/kg. Even watching the transactions is an education.

The Wider Market Experience

Beyond the prestige products, Gramat market is a lively, unpretentious weekly social event. Stalls sell Cahors wine, lavender honey, dried cèpes, hand-thrown pottery from local ateliers, and seasonal vegetables from the Dordogne valley gardens below the plateau.

The café-tabacs ringing the square open early and serve strong café au lait and warm croissants to market-goers from 07:30 onwards. Arrive by 08:30 to catch producers at their stalls before the best cheeses and confits sell out.
