Via dell'Amore (Lover's Lane)

Carved into the sheer pink-and-ochre cliffs between Riomaggiore and Manarola, the Via dell'Amore is one of Italy's most romantic coastal paths — a 1-km ledge of rock where the Ligurian Sea glitters below you at every step. Reopened after years of restoration, it feels like walking inside a postcard.

The Walk Itself

The paved path hugs the cliff face at sea level, passing through short tunnels blasted from the rock and opening onto panoramic terraces where the turquoise water seems close enough to touch.

Look for the padlocks still clinging to the old fence sections — lovers have been attaching them here since the 1950s, making the Via dell'Amore one of the earliest 'love lock' traditions in Europe.

Practical Tips

Entry is ticketed and timed to manage crowds — book your slot online at the Cinque Terre National Park website before you arrive, especially in July and August.

The best light hits the path in the late afternoon when the warm sun turns the cliff walls amber; sunset from the midpoint terrace over Manarola is genuinely breathtaking.
