Castle of Riomaggiore (Castello di Riomaggiore)

Perched on the rocky spine above the village, the 13th-century Castello di Riomaggiore rewards a steep 10-minute climb with the most sweeping panorama of the entire southern Cinque Terre coast. The colourful tower-houses stack below you like a painter's palette tumbling into the sea.

What You'll See

From the castle's open terrace you can see all the way north to Manarola and on clear days pick out the white outline of Portovenere to the south — a 180-degree arc of coastline that no Instagram filter can improve on.

The castle itself hosts temporary art exhibitions and cultural events in summer, so check the local programme; sometimes you stumble into an outdoor concert with that view as a backdrop.

Getting Up There

Follow the stepped lane called Via del Castello from the upper village — it's signposted and takes about 10 minutes from the main square, Piazza Fleming.

Go at golden hour: the low sun sets the terracotta and yellow facades of the village alight while the harbour below turns to hammered copper.
