Santuario di Montallegro & Panoramic Terrace
Perched at 612 metres above Rapallo on the ridge of Monte Rosa, the 16th-century Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montallegro commands a jaw-dropping 360-degree panorama that sweeps from the Portofino headland to the Cinque Terre on a clear day. A vintage cable car whisks you up in under ten minutes.
The cable car and the sanctuary
The Funivia di Rapallo has been carrying pilgrims and day-trippers up to Montallegro since 1934, and the small red gondolas are a charming piece of living history. The ride itself is thrilling — the car swings out over steep terraced gardens and chestnut forest before depositing you at the hilltop station.
The sanctuary, founded in 1557 around a Byzantine icon said to have appeared miraculously, is still an active place of pilgrimage. The interior is covered in ex-votos — small painted panels left by sailors and fishermen as thanks for surviving storms — which are unexpectedly moving.
The view and what to do at the top
Step out onto the terrace in front of the church and the entire Golfo del Tigullio unfolds below you: Rapallo's lungomare curves in a perfect arc, Portofino's peninsula juts into cobalt water, and on clear winter days the snow-capped Apennines frame the scene behind you.
A small bar-restaurant next to the upper cable-car station serves cold Ligurian white wine, focaccia and simple pasta dishes. Eat outside on the terrace and take your time — this is exactly the kind of view that makes you forget your return ticket.
