Romanesque Bridge of Puente la Reina (Puente de los Peregrinos)
This perfectly preserved 11th-century bridge is one of the most photographed monuments on the entire Camino de Santiago, its six elegant stone arches spanning the Río Arga in a single graceful sweep. Queen Muniadona of Navarre commissioned it so pilgrims could cross safely, and today it still carries foot traffic just as it did in medieval times.
The Bridge Up Close
Stand at the southern bank at dawn and you will see the warm limestone glow amber before the first tour groups arrive — the reflections in the slow-moving Arga are almost perfectly symmetrical.
Each arch spans roughly 27 metres and the roadway is just wide enough for two pilgrims to pass side by side, giving the crossing an intimate, almost ceremonial feel that wider modern bridges can never replicate.
Look for the carved scallop shells worked into the stonework at intervals — small details that reward those who slow down and look closely rather than simply crossing and moving on.
Pilgrim Crossroads Context
The town sits at the exact confluence of the Camino Francés and the Camino Aragonés, meaning pilgrims from two major routes merged here before heading west together toward Burgos and eventually Santiago de Compostela.
A bronze statue of Santiago Peregrino stands at the northern end of the bridge, staff in hand, marking the spot where countless thousands have paused for a photograph or a quiet moment of reflection.
The bridge is walkable 24 hours a day and costs nothing to cross — its greatest gift is pure, unmediated history under your feet.
