The Architecture
The octagonal plan is unique in Navarrese Romanesque architecture and echoes the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem — a deliberate reference to the sacred geometry of pilgrimage that would have resonated powerfully with medieval travellers.
The surrounding arcade of 33 arches (some accounts say 30) is detached from the chapel walls, creating a covered ambulatory that pilgrims once used for nocturnal prayer processions; walking it today in silence is oddly moving.
The carved capitals inside the chapel are exceptionally fine — look for the intertwined foliage and animal figures on the columns flanking the apse, which show a craftsman working at the very top of 12th-century skill.
Getting There and the Experience
The chapel sits at the end of a short track off the NA-6018 road between Puente la Reina and Muruzábal; a small car park marks the turning and the building is visible across the fields from several hundred metres away.
Pilgrims on the Camino Aragonés pass directly by the door, and many stop to rest in the shade of the arcade — you may share the space with a handful of walkers, but the surrounding emptiness of the cereal plain absorbs all noise.
The interior is lit only by small Romanesque windows and a few candles; after the bright Navarrese sun outside, the transition into that cool, amber-lit space is genuinely affecting.
