Mercato di Piazza Bartolo Longo, Pompeii

Tucked behind the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary in the modern town of Pompeii, this twice-weekly street market is where Campanian life plays out in full colour — pyramids of San Marzano tomatoes, braids of smoked provola cheese, and vendors hawking everything from hand-embroidered linen to secondhand tools. It is the antidote to the souvenir shops clustered around the ruins entranc

What to buy and taste

The food stalls are the main event: look for locally grown friarielli (bitter broccoli rabe), bundles of fresh basil, and the small, intensely sweet piennolo tomatoes that grow on Vesuvius's volcanic slopes and are sold still on the vine.

Cheese vendors will slice you a wedge of aged caciocavallo or hand you a knot of fresh fior di latte mozzarella wrapped in paper — eat it immediately for the full effect.

Household and clothing stalls fill the outer ring; prices are refreshingly local, and a little Italian goes a long way in negotiating a friendly deal on ceramics or linen tablecloths.

Making the most of your visit

The market runs on Monday and Friday mornings from roughly 7 am to 1 pm; arrive before 10 am for the best selection and before the heat builds.

The modern town of Pompeii itself is worth a short wander — the grand 19th-century Sanctuary draws millions of pilgrims and its baroque interior is a striking contrast to the ancient ruins a few hundred metres away.

Combine a market morning with a late-opening slot at the archaeological park in the afternoon to structure a near-perfect Pompeii day.
