Belvedere di Quota 1000, Vesuvio National Park
While most visitors funnel straight to the summit car park, the Belvedere di Quota 1000 — a natural terrace on the western flank of Vesuvius accessible via the Sentiero 5 trail — offers an uncrowded, panoramic perspective that frames the entire Bay of Naples in a single, staggering sweep. The foreground of ancient lava fields makes it a photographer's dream.
The viewpoint and how to reach it
Sentiero 5 departs from the Osservatorio Vesuviano, the elegant 19th-century volcanic observatory perched at around 608 m on the mountain's western slope and reachable by car or taxi from Ercolano. The trail rises steadily through pine forest and open lava fields to the belvedere in about 45 minutes.
The terrace itself is unfenced and raw — a flat lava shelf where you can sit with your legs dangling over the slope and watch the afternoon light turn the bay silver. On exceptionally clear days the outline of Capri is unmistakable.
Unlike the summit path, Sentiero 5 is rarely busy even in high season, and the Osservatorio's small museum (free entry) about volcanic monitoring is a genuinely interesting pre-walk stop.
Best time to visit
Late afternoon light — roughly 4 to 6 pm in summer — bathes the bay in gold and makes for the most photogenic conditions; the trail is well-marked and safe to descend in the evening.
Spring (April–May) brings wildflowers to the lava fields and the clearest skies before summer haze settles over the bay; this is the single best season to combine the hike with the archaeological sites below.
Carry at least 1.5 litres of water; there are no facilities on the trail itself, though the Osservatorio has a small café at the base.
