Boucle de Poissy et Forêt de Saint-Germain-en-Laye
The Seine makes a dramatic horseshoe bend around Poissy, creating a green corridor of riverbanks, wetlands and woodland that feels worlds away from the Paris suburbs. Linked trails connect the town directly to the vast Forêt de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, one of the largest royal forests in the Paris region with over 3,500 hectares of oak and beech.
Walking the River Loop
The marked Boucle de Poissy trail follows the Seine's right bank northward from the town, passing fishing spots, poplar-lined towpaths and the occasional heron standing motionless in the shallows. The full loop is around 12 kilometres but can easily be shortened by cutting back through the residential streets of Villennes-sur-Seine.
Spring and early autumn are the best seasons: wildflowers carpet the riverbanks in April and May, while October turns the forest edge a burnished copper that makes every photograph look effortlessly composed.
Into the Royal Forest
From the southern edge of Poissy, signed paths climb gently into the Forêt de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, where centuries-old oaks shade wide sandy tracks originally cut for royal hunting parties. Mountain bikers, trail runners and families with pushchairs all share the network peacefully — the forest is big enough to absorb everyone.
Pack a picnic and aim for the Carrefour du Bouquet de la Reine, a scenic crossroads deep in the forest where several trails converge beneath a canopy so dense it muffles all road noise. It is only about 5 kilometres from Poissy town centre on foot.
