Lemon Grove Harvest Walk with Local Farmers
The sfusato amalfitano lemon — elongated, thick-skinned, and so aromatic the zest alone perfumes a whole kitchen — grows on terraces around Pogerola that have been cultivated without interruption since the 10th century. The Harvest Season
The sfusato has two main harvests: the primaticcio in February–April, when the first large fruits ripen, and the main summer harvest running June through September. The February–April window is the more dramatic — the trees are simultaneously flowering and fruiting, filling the terraces with a scent that is almost narcotic.
During a typical grove visit you are handed a pair of clippers and a wicker basket and shown how to cut the fruit at the correct angle to avoid damaging the branch. A working terrace is a surprisingly physical place — the paths between rows are barely 60 cm wide and the ground drops away sharply on the downhill side.
From Grove to Glass
After picking, the session moves to a shaded pergola where the farmer's family demonstrates how sfusato zest is cold-macerated in grain alcohol to make limoncello — a process that takes at least two weeks and requires a 1:1 ratio of zest to spirit by weight for the authentic version. You taste the result alongside a slice of delizia al limone, the cream-filled sponge cake invented in Sorrento but perfected, locals will insist, in the Amalfi hills.
Most farms will sell you a bottle of their own limoncello to take home — far superior to anything sold in the souvenir shops on the waterfront, and usually half the price.
