Piazza dei Miracoli & the Leaning Tower

No amount of photographs prepares you for the moment the Leaning Tower lurches into view across the emerald lawn of the Campo dei Miracoli. This UNESCO-listed square packs four marble masterpieces into one luminous piazza — and the tilt is even more absurd in person.

The Tower itself

The Torre di Pisa leans at roughly 3.97 degrees — corrected from a peak of 5.5 degrees after stabilisation works in the 1990s. Climbing its 294 helical steps rewards you with rooftop views over the Duomo's striped apses and, on clear days, the Apuan Alps to the north.

Book your timed-entry slot weeks ahead in summer; ticket windows sell out by mid-morning. The climb takes 20–30 minutes at a leisurely pace and the steps are worn smooth by eight centuries of pilgrims, scholars and selfie-seekers.

Beyond the Tower

The Duomo di Pisa, begun in 1063, is the mother church of Pisan Romanesque architecture and free to enter with a Piazza ticket. Look up at the gilded coffered ceiling and Giovanni Pisano's pulpit — both are extraordinary and routinely overlooked by visitors sprinting for the Tower.

The Camposanto Monumentale, a cloistered cemetery on the north edge of the square, shelters Roman sarcophagi and haunting 14th-century frescoes including the 'Triumph of Death'. It is one of the most atmospheric spaces in Tuscany and rarely crowded even in August.

Practical tips

Arrive before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to photograph the Tower without tour-group crowds obscuring the foreground. The grass is open and perfect for a picnic; locals bring prosecco at sunset.

The square sits 1.5 km northwest of Pisa Centrale station — a flat, walkable 20 minutes along Via Santa Maria, or a quick taxi ride.
