Parco Regionale Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli
Just 5 km west of the Leaning Tower, a vast protected coastal park stretches from the Arno estuary north to the Versilia Riviera — 24,000 hectares of pine forest, sand dunes, wetlands and empty beach that most visitors to Pisa never discover. This is where Pisans escape.
What to explore
The Tenuta di San Rossore estate at the park's heart was once a royal hunting reserve and still shelters wild boar, fallow deer, red squirrels and a resident herd of camels — descendants of animals brought here by Grand Duke Leopold II in the 19th century. Guided jeep tours depart from the Centro Visite San Rossore and book up fast on weekends.
The beach at Marina di Pisa, accessible by bus from Pisa Centrale, offers a long stretch of relatively uncrowded sand backed by umbrella pines. It is a proper working-class Pisan seaside resort — beach bars, grilled fish, locals playing bocce — rather than a manicured resort beach.
Birdwatching and cycling
The Lago di Massaciuccoli at the park's southern end is one of Italy's most important wetland bird reserves, home to purple herons, marsh harriers, great white egrets and, in winter, tens of thousands of migratory waterfowl. The lake is also where Giacomo Puccini composed most of his operas — his villa at Torre del Lago Puccini is open for visits.
A network of flat cycling paths threads through the pine forests between Pisa and the coast. Rent a bike from one of several shops near Pisa Centrale and pedal to the beach in under 30 minutes along a car-free track through cathedral-like pinewoods.
Getting there
Bus LAM Rossa from Pisa Centrale reaches Marina di Pisa in about 20 minutes (€1.50). For San Rossore estate tours, book online at sanrossore.it — tours run weekends and holidays year-round, plus weekdays in summer.
The park is at its most magical in early morning when mist sits in the pine forest and deer graze the clearings. Pack a picnic; facilities inside the estate are minimal by design.
