Réserve Naturelle de Nohèdes
An hour's drive west of Perpignan up the Conflent valley, the Réserve Naturelle de Nohèdes protects 2,300 hectares of Pyrenean wilderness — glacial lakes, ancient beech forest, golden eagles overhead and Pyrenean chamois picking their way across limestone ridges. This is one of the least-visited nature reserves in the French Pyrenees, and that is precisely its gift.
The Landscape and Wildlife
The reserve rises from 800 metres at the village of Nohèdes to over 2,700 metres at the high ridgeline, compressing an astonishing range of habitats into a single valley. In spring, the lower meadows are carpeted with wild orchids and the streams run white with snowmelt; by July the high pastures turn gold and the marmots are fat and bold enough to photograph at close range.
Birdwatchers come specifically for the lammergeier (bearded vulture), reintroduced to the Pyrenees and now regularly spotted riding thermals above the reserve's eastern cliffs. The reserve also shelters genets, otters along the Castellane stream, and a healthy population of roe deer.
Walking the Reserve
The sentier de découverte (discovery trail) from the village of Nohèdes is an easy 3-hour loop accessible to most walkers, taking in the Lac de Nohèdes — a glacial lake at 1,760 metres that reflects the surrounding peaks with mirror clarity on calm mornings. The trail is well-marked and the reserve's information panels are genuinely educational rather than perfunctory.
For more ambitious walkers, the GR36 long-distance path passes through the reserve and connects to the wider Pyrenean trail network. A full day's traverse to the Col de Jasse de la Coume and back rewards with panoramic views into Spanish Catalonia.
Visiting Responsibly
The reserve has a strict no-camping, no-dogs policy to protect its wildlife — day visits only, and you must stay on marked trails. The village of Nohèdes itself has a small interpretation centre (Maison de la Réserve) where rangers can advise on trail conditions and recent wildlife sightings.
The drive up the Gorges de la Castellane from Villefranche-de-Conflent to Nohèdes is itself spectacular — a narrow road threading through limestone gorges above a turquoise river that would be a headline attraction anywhere else in France.
